You visit a doctor for a check-up even when you feel fine. A car gets its oil changed before the engine fails. A computer needs the same kind of care. Small jobs done on time stop big problems later.
The book names three gains from this care: a faster computer, a safer computer, and a computer that lasts longer. It then gives four practices. We look at each one below.
Disk Cleanup
Every day you use a computer, it saves extra files in the background. Some come from websites you visit. Some are left over from updates. Some sit in the Recycle Bin after you delete them. The book lists four kinds: temporary internet files, system cache, Windows update files, and items in the Recycle Bin.
These files fill up the disk. They can also make the computer slower. Windows has its own tool to remove them.
Steps to Perform Disk Cleanup
The book gives four steps. In short:
- Search for Disk Cleanup in the Windows search bar and open it. A small window asks which drive to clean.
- Pick the drive, usually C:, and click OK.
- A new box shows a list of file types. Tick the ones you want to delete.
- Click OK again. Windows removes the files you ticked.
The book's Figure 2.6 (Disk Cleanup Menu) shows this list for drive C:. Each file type has a tick box and a size. At the bottom, Windows shows the total space you will gain. The same box also has a Clean up system files button.
Patch management/ System Updation
Software is never perfect. Developers keep finding mistakes, called bugs, and fixing them. They send these fixes to your computer as updates.
An updated system is harder for viruses and other threats to attack. The book names two types of updates:
| Type of update | What it updates |
|---|---|
| Operating system updates | Windows, macOS, etc. |
| Application updates | Programs like browsers, media players, etc. |
To check for updates in Windows, open Settings > Update & Security, click Check for updates, and install any updates that are available.
Staying Protected with Windows Defender
Windows comes with its own security guard.
It can scan the computer in two ways:
- Quick Scan: checks the common problem areas. It is fast.
- Full Scan: checks the entire system, carefully. It takes longer.
Windows Defender also gives real-time protection. This means it is always watching in the background. If something suspicious happens, it alerts you at once. You do not have to start a scan for this.
Keeping a maintenance calendar
The first three practices only help if you do them regularly. That is easy to forget. A maintenance calendar solves this. It is a fixed plan for when to clean the system, when to scan for viruses, and when to check for updates.
You can keep it in two ways. Write it down on paper, or set reminders on your phone or computer.

Short questions
1.List the two benefits of running regular disk cleanup.2 marks
Answer
The computer collects unnecessary files such as temporary internet files, system cache, Windows update files, and items in the Recycle Bin. "These files take up space and may slow down system performance." So the two benefits of regular disk cleanup are: (1) it frees the space these files take up, and (2) it stops them from slowing down system performance. Disk Cleanup "helps remove such files safely."
2.How does Windows Defender help in maintaining system health?2 marks
Answer
Windows Defender is the built-in security tool in Windows that protects your computer from viruses, malware, and other threats. It offers two types of scans: Quick Scan to check common problem areas and Full Scan to check the entire system thoroughly. It also provides real-time protection, which means it keeps watching your system in the background and alerts you if anything suspicious happens.
3.What is preventive maintenance? Why is it important?2 marks
Answer
Preventive maintenance means doing simple tasks that help avoid bigger problems in the future. These tasks can improve your computer's speed, keep it secure, and help it last longer.
4.What is Disk Cleanup? Name the unnecessary files it removes.2 marks
Answer
After some time, the computer collects unnecessary files such as temporary internet files, system cache, Windows update files, and items in the Recycle Bin. Disk Cleanup is a built-in Windows tool that helps remove such files safely.
5.Write the steps to perform Disk Cleanup.4 marks
Answer
- Type Disk Cleanup in the Windows search bar and open the tool from the list. This opens a small window asking you to choose a drive to clean.
- Select the drive you want to clean (usually C:) and click OK.
- Check the boxes from the dialog box that appears after OK for the types of files you want to delete.
- Click OK to remove the selected files.
6.What are patches? Why should you keep your system updated?2 marks
Answer
Software updates, also known as patches, are released regularly by developers to fix bugs, add features, and improve security. Keeping your system updated helps to protect it from viruses and security threats.
7.Name the two types of updates and write the steps to check for updates in Windows.4 marks
Answer
The two types of updates are: (I) Operating system updates (for Windows, macOS, etc.) and (II) Application updates (for programs like browsers, media players, etc.). To check for updates in Windows: Open Settings > Update & Security, click Check for updates, and install the updates if available. (Note: this is the Windows 10 path; on Windows 11 the button is under Settings > Windows Update.)
8.What is a maintenance calendar? How can you keep one?2 marks
Answer
It's a good idea to set a regular schedule for basic maintenance tasks. A maintenance calendar helps you remember when to clean your system, scan for viruses, or check for updates. You can write it down or set reminders on your phone or computer.
Long questions
1.Briefly explain any two preventive maintenance techniques that help to keep a computer running smoothly.8 marks
Answer
Start with the book's meaning of preventive maintenance: "Preventive maintenance means doing simple tasks that help avoid bigger problems in the future. These tasks can improve your computer's speed, keep it secure, and help it last longer."
Then explain ANY TWO of the four practices the book gives:
- Disk Cleanup: the computer collects unnecessary files such as temporary internet files, system cache, Windows update files, and items in the Recycle Bin. "These files take up space and may slow down system performance." Disk Cleanup "is a built-in Windows tool that helps remove such files safely."
- Patch management/ System Updation: "Software updates, also known as patches, are released regularly by developers to fix bugs, add features, and improve security. Keeping your system updated helps to protect it from viruses and security threats." Two types: operating system updates and application updates.
- Staying Protected with Windows Defender: "Windows Defender is the built-in security tool in Windows that protects your computer from viruses, malware, and other threats." Quick Scan checks common problem areas; Full Scan checks the entire system thoroughly; real-time protection keeps watching in the background.
- Keeping a maintenance calendar: "A maintenance calendar helps you remember when to clean your system, scan for viruses, or check for updates. You can write it down or set reminders on your phone or computer."
Aim for 150-250 words.
2.A classmate wants to clean up disk space after a large Windows update. Explain how to use Disk Cleanup, including the option to remove system files safely.8 marks
Answer
Cover three parts:
- Why clean up: the computer collects unnecessary files such as temporary internet files, system cache, Windows update files, and items in the Recycle Bin. "These files take up space and may slow down system performance." Disk Cleanup "is a built-in Windows tool that helps remove such files safely."
- Steps to Perform Disk Cleanup (book wording):
- I. Type Disk Cleanup in the Windows search bar and open the tool from the list. This opens a small window asking you to choose a drive to clean.
- II. Select the drive you want to clean (usually C:) and click OK.
- III. Check the boxes from the dialog box that appears after OK, as shown in Figure 2.6, for the types of files you want to delete.
- IV. Click OK to remove the selected files.
- The system-files option: Figure 2.6 (Disk Cleanup Menu) shows a "Clean up system files" button in the same dialog. The book text lists "Windows update files" among the unnecessary files, but it does not explain this button in words. BEYOND THE BOOK (not book text): clicking "Clean up system files" may ask for the drive again and then shows the list with system file types added, such as Windows Update Cleanup; you tick them and click OK as in steps III and IV.
Aim for 150-250 words.
3.Explain how keeping the system updated and using Windows Defender protect a computer. Write the steps to check for updates in Windows and name the two types of scans in Windows Defender.8 marks
