Imagine one cashier in a shop on Eid. The queue gets longer and longer. Open three more counters and the line moves fast again. Load balancing does the same for a network.
A load balancer sits between the users and a group of servers. Every new request goes to the load balancer first, and it decides which server should handle it. This makes the network faster and more reliable. You find load balancing in large networks and data centers, where many users arrive at once.
Benefits of Load Balancing
The book gives six benefits:
- improves network speed and response time
- reduces the risk of server failure
- if one server fails, others continue working
- provides a better user experience
- helps handle high traffic easily
- increases network reliability and availability
The third one is the easiest to picture. Without load balancing, one broken server means a broken website. With it, the load balancer simply stops sending work to the broken server. Users may not even notice.
Basic Load Balancing Methods
How does the load balancer choose a server? The book names three methods:
Here is what each method does in practice:
| Method | How it picks a server |
|---|---|
| Round Robin | takes turns: server 1, server 2, server 3, then back to server 1 |
| Least Connection | picks the server with the fewest active connections right now (the least busy one) |
| IP Hash | turns the user's IP address into a number, so the same user usually reaches the same server |
All three methods balance the network load. Simple methods, like Round Robin, are easy to set up.

Short questions
1.What is network load balancing?2 marks
Answer
From the book: "Network load balancing is used to manage network traffic. It distributes work among multiple servers or links. This helps prevent overloading of one device."
2.Write any four benefits of load balancing.3 marks
Answer
From the book: "Load balancing improves network speed and response time. It reduces the risk of server failure. If one server fails, others continue working. It provides better user experience. Load balancing helps handle high traffic easily. It increases network reliability and availability." (Any four.)
3.What happens in a load-balanced network when one server fails?2 marks
Answer
From the book: load balancing "reduces the risk of server failure. If one server fails, others continue working." It "increases network reliability and availability".
4.Name the basic load balancing methods given in the book.3 marks
Answer
From the book: "Round Robin method sends requests one by one. Least Connection method sends traffic to less busy servers. IP Hash method uses IP address to decide traffic. These methods balance the network load."
5.Differentiate between the Round Robin and Least Connection methods.3 marks
Answer
From the book: "Round Robin method sends requests one by one." "Least Connection method sends traffic to less busy servers." So Round Robin takes turns, while Least Connection looks at which server is less busy.
6.Where is load balancing used and why?2 marks
Answer
From the book: "It is used in large networks and data centers. Proper load balancing ensures smooth performance. It helps networks handle more users."
