An open Wi-Fi network is like a house with the door left open. Anyone nearby can walk in and use it. This topic shows how to lock the door and manage your router.
Without security, anyone in range can use your internet. Hackers can steal personal information from an unsecured network. A secure network keeps your data safe and private. It also stops strangers from slowing down your internet.
Router Web Interface
Your router has its own settings page. You reach it through a web browser, just like a website. The book explains it in three numbered points.
1. Router Configuration
To open the settings page, follow these steps:
- Open a web browser.
- Type the router's IP address.
- Log in with the username and password.
- Change the Wi-Fi name and password, and the security settings.
2. Wi-Fi Encryption
Encryption scrambles your data before it travels through the air. Only the right devices can unscramble it.
The book names the common security protocols: WPA2 and WPA3. An older one, WEP, is not secure. Strong encryption stops data theft, so always choose the newest method your router offers.
3. Default Gateway
Your local network is not the whole internet. To reach anything outside it, data has to pass through a door. That door is the default gateway.
Any data going to an outside network goes through the gateway. The gateway then sends it on to the correct network. If the gateway is set wrongly, you lose internet access. So the setting must be correct.
The book also has a class activity here: create a sample strong password, eight characters long, using letters and numbers.
Guest Networks
Visitors often ask for your Wi-Fi password. A guest network lets them use the internet without joining your main network.
Guests on this network cannot reach your personal devices, such as your laptop or printer. This makes your network safer and more private. A guest network also helps you control how the internet is used. Homes and offices both find it useful.

Short questions
1.Why is Wi-Fi security important?3 marks
Answer
From the book: "Wi-Fi security protects the network from unauthorized access. Without security, anyone can use the internet. Hackers can steal personal information from unsecured networks. Secure Wi-Fi keeps data safe and private. It also prevents slow internet speed."
2.What is the router web interface? How is it opened?3 marks
Answer
From the book: "The router web interface is used to manage router settings. It is opened using a web browser. The user enters the router's IP address to access it. A username and password are required to log in."
3.Which settings can be changed through the router web interface?2 marks
Answer
From the book: "The interface allows changes in Wi-Fi name and password. It also helps control security settings."
4.What is Wi-Fi encryption? Name two common security protocols.3 marks
Answer
From the book: Wi-Fi encryption "Protects data sent over the network. It converts data into a secure form. WPA2 and WPA3 are common security protocols."
5.Why should WEP not be used for Wi-Fi?2 marks
Answer
From the book: "Older protocols like WEP are not secure. Strong encryption prevents data theft. Users should always select the latest encryption method."
6.What is a default gateway?3 marks
Answer
From the book: "A default gateway connects a local network to other networks. It is usually a router. Data meant for outside networks goes through the gateway. The gateway forwards data to the correct network."
7.What is a guest network? Write its benefits.3 marks
Answer
From the book: "A guest network allows visitors to use the internet. It is separate from the main home network. Guest users cannot access personal devices. This increases network safety and privacy. Guest networks help control internet usage."
Long questions
1.Explain the router web interface. Describe router configuration, Wi-Fi encryption and the default gateway.8 marks
Answer
Cover the sub-heading "Router Web Interface" and its three numbered points, using the book's text:
- Router Configuration (verbatim): "The router web interface is used to manage router settings. It is opened using a web browser. The user enters the router's IP address to access it. A username and password are required to log in. The interface allows changes in Wi-Fi name and password. It also helps control security settings."
- Wi-Fi Encryption (verbatim): "Protects data sent over the network. It converts data into a secure form. WPA2 and WPA3 are common security protocols. Older protocols like WEP are not secure. Strong encryption prevents data theft. Users should always select the latest encryption method."
- Default Gateway (verbatim): "A default gateway connects a local network to other networks. It is usually a router. Data meant for outside networks goes through the gateway. The gateway forwards data to the correct network. Internet access depends on it. Proper gateway setting is necessary."
- Steps of opening the interface, in order, earn marks for clarity: open a web browser, enter the router's IP address, log in with a username and password, change the Wi-Fi name and password and the security settings.
Aim for 250-350 words.
2.What is Wi-Fi security and why is it needed? Explain guest networks.6 marks
Answer
Cover the topic opening and "Guest Networks", using the book's text:
- Wi-Fi security (verbatim): "Wi-Fi security protects the network from unauthorized access."
- Why it is needed: "Without security, anyone can use the internet. Hackers can steal personal information from unsecured networks. Secure Wi-Fi keeps data safe and private. It also prevents slow internet speed. Strong security improves overall network performance."
- Guest networks (verbatim): "A guest network allows visitors to use the internet. It is separate from the main home network. Guest users cannot access personal devices. This increases network safety and privacy. Guest networks help control internet usage. They are useful in homes and offices."
Aim for 150-250 words.
